How to Start Affiliate Marketing in 2026

Affiliate marketing is simple in concept — recommend something, earn a commission when someone buys through your link — but most beginners overcomplicate the start. Here’s the actual order of operations.

1. Pick a niche you can talk about for a year

Not the most “profitable” niche — the one you can produce content about for 12 months without running out of things to say. Depth beats breadth when you’re starting out.

2. Join 2-3 affiliate programs, not twenty

Start with programs that match your niche and have low approval barriers: Amazon Associates for physical products, plus one or two niche-specific programs (software, digital products, courses). Spreading across twenty programs before you have traffic just creates admin work.

3. Publish content that already has buying intent

  • “Best X for Y” comparison posts
  • Honest single-product reviews
  • “How to do X” guides that naturally recommend a tool partway through

4. Disclose clearly, every time

Every post with an affiliate link needs a visible disclosure — not just a footer link. It’s required by the FTC and by every affiliate program’s terms, and readers trust honest disclosure more than they distrust the link itself.

5. Track what actually converts

Most affiliate income comes from a small number of posts. After 90 days, look at your link clicks and conversions, and double down on the 2-3 posts doing the heavy lifting instead of spreading effort evenly.
